It began as a beautiful holiday morning.
The sun was shining. Families were strolling along the beach. Children were playing in the sand. Tourists relaxed under clear blue skies, enjoying what seemed like another perfect day in paradise.
Nothing looked unusual.
Nothing looked dangerous.
And yet, among the hundreds of people enjoying the peaceful shoreline, one young girl noticed something that didn’t feel right.
She was only 10 years old.
And because she trusted what she had learned in school, countless lives may have been spared.
The Ocean Began to Behave Strangely
On the morning of December 26, 2004, young Tilly Smith was walking with her family along Mai Khao Beach in Phuket, Thailand.
At first, everything seemed normal.
Then she looked toward the water.
The ocean was doing something she had never seen before.
The sea was rapidly pulling away from the shoreline.
Fish were flopping on exposed sand.
The water appeared to be bubbling and swirling.
Many people nearby thought it was fascinating.
Some even walked closer to get a better look.
Others pulled out cameras.
To most adults, it looked like a rare and interesting natural phenomenon.
