Most people have a washing machine at home, but surprisingly few take the time to explore all the settings on the control panel.
Instead, they choose the same familiar cycle every time, press start, and walk away.
But there is one setting that deserves a little more attention: the Eco or Energy-Saving cycle.
It may not look particularly impressive. In fact, an Eco program can sometimes take much longer than a normal wash. That can make people wonder how a longer cycle could possibly save electricity.
The answer comes down to how washing machines use energy.
Why Your Washing Machine Uses So Much Energy
The motor that turns the drum needs electricity, but one of the biggest energy demands in a typical washing cycle comes from heating the water.
Heating water requires considerably more energy than simply moving clothes around in a drum.
This is why washing clothes at very high temperatures can increase energy consumption.
An Eco program is designed differently.
Rather than relying heavily on very hot water, many Eco cycles use a lower temperature and compensate with a longer washing period. The clothes remain in contact with the detergent and water for longer, allowing the machine to achieve effective cleaning without necessarily needing as much energy for heating.
So when you see an Eco cycle taking several hours, don’t automatically assume that it is wasting electricity.
The longer duration is often part of the energy-saving strategy.
