Hayden recalled telling her mother she no longer wanted to work together and hearing the response, “You owe me.”
The relationship continued to deteriorate, with Hayden later describing a dynamic in which her mother had become more like a boss than a parent.
Their strained relationship became public again this year after Hayden’s memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, revisited her childhood and family life.
Vogel pushed back strongly against her daughter’s account, telling Page Six that she had endured “20 years of trauma” and had chosen to go no-contact with Hayden on the advice of professionals.
Hayden, meanwhile, said she had once left the door open to reconciliation but felt her mother had “slammed that door” in her face.
Her relationship with her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, was notably different. The former New York City firefighter was among those close to Hayden, and after her death described her as “an incredible light and a force of nature.”
She was also carrying the loss of her younger brother
Hayden’s life had already been marked by another devastating loss.
Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died suddenly in 2023 at just 28 from heart complications. The siblings had both grown up acting and appeared together in projects including Tiger Cruise.
Hayden was devastated by his death, later saying:
“He was my only sibling… When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul,” the actress said.
She said she would never truly get over losing him.
In 2025, she paid tribute to Jansen on what would have been his 31st birthday, writing that she hoped he was in “a beautiful place” and adding, “I’ll see you again.”
Now, following Hayden’s own sudden death, her story is being remembered not only for the fame she achieved, but also for the childhood pressures, family struggles and devastating losses she carried with her for much of her life.
