My name was written on the front in my father’s confident, familiar handwriting. Inside, I found a stack of receipts—rent payments, utility bills, medical bills—each with my mother’s address. They dated back years.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at. Why would my father keep all this?
Then I found the little handwritten note hidden between the pages.

“She wasn’t angry that you stayed with me.
She was ashamed that I saw her struggling.
I helped her stay afloat so you’d always have two safe homes.”
I sat there for a long time, staring at those words, feeling something inside me open. All those years, I thought my mother resented me: she hid her difficulties, not her hatred. And my father… he had carried us both in silence, even when they didn’t speak, even when no one knew.
