My hands trembled as I raised the calabash toward my lips. The villagers held their breath, Oko eyes glittered with excitement, his smile wide, wiicked and full of expectation.
When I saw no one was coming to save me, I decided to accept my faith. I held the calabash, closed my eyes and prepared to drink. Then a piercing scream tore through the riverbank.
“STOP HER! STOP HER!”
The crowd gasped and turned to see who was shouting.
An elderly woman came running barefoot through the dust, her wrapper slipping from her waist as she pushed through the villagers. Sweat streamed down her face, and terrór filled her eyes.
She pointed a trembling finger at the calabash.
“Don’t let her drink it, If she drinks that water, she will díe!” The old woman cried.
A shocked silence fell over the crowd. The old woman’s chest heaved as she struggled for breath.
Then she uttered the words that left everyone shocked.
“The water has been poísoned, I have proof”.
