> **Arthur (12:45 p.m.):** Where are you? The apartment is completely empty. The girls’ rooms are cleared out. What did you do?
> **Arthur (1:15 p.m.):** Answer me! The bank just called. The joint credit card I used to pay for Clara’s medical fees was flagged and frozen. They said the primary funding account was closed out by a corporate trust this morning.
> **Arthur (1:30 p.m.):** Elena, call me back right now. We need to talk about the kids. Clara and I are having… adjustments. I need the girls to stay with you permanently, but we need to renegotiate the child support terms. I can’t afford the apartment maintenance fees on my own salary without the joint account subsidy.
I smiled softly to myself. The “subsidy” he referred to was actually my monthly salary, which I had faithfully deposited into our joint account for eight years to keep our household running while he spent his bonuses on luxury watches and designer clothes for his mistress.I opened my email and found a message from my legal counsel, forwarded directly to Arthur’s attorney just twenty minutes prior. It contained the formal notice of our permanent relocation abroad, fully backed by the sole custody agreement Arthur had so eagerly signed without reading the fine print. Because he had waived all parental rights to speed up the divorce and avoid child support, he no longer had any legal say in where his daughters lived.

### A New Horizon
I didn’t reply to his texts. I blocked his number, removed the SIM card from my phone, and slipped it into the seatback pocket.
“Mommy, look!” Maya pointed out the window. The sun was setting over the Atlantic, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, violet, and deep crimson. “It’s so beautiful.”
“It is, sweetheart,” I said, putting my arms around both of my daughters.
Arthur and his family were welcome to the apartment, the car, and the bitter reality of the lies they had built their future upon. They had traded a loyal family for a mirage.
As the plane pushed deeper into the night, heading toward a life of peace, security, and boundless opportunity, I finally felt the weight of the last eight years completely evaporate. What was never truly theirs would never stay with them—and for the first time in a very long time, my daughters and I were exactly where we belonged.
