It wouldn’t open.
She pulled harder.
Nothing.
She walked back toward her car.
Then returned.
I watched her inspect the new security camera.
That’s when she noticed me standing inside the house.
I opened the front door.
“Good evening, Monica.”
She stared at me.
“What did you do?”
“I secured my electrical outlet.”
“You can’t do that!”
I raised an eyebrow.
“It’s on my property.”
She looked furious.
“You knew I was coming.”
“I suspected you might.”
She pointed toward the camera.
“Are you recording me?”
“I’m recording my property.”
She stared at me for several seconds.
Then she said, “This is ridiculous.”
“No. What’s ridiculous is that you were using my electricity without asking.”
“I told you I’d pay you back.”
“When?”
She didn’t answer.
I continued.
“I don’t want to fight with you. I don’t want your money. I simply don’t want you using my property without permission.”
She crossed her arms.
“You’ve changed.”
I smiled.
“Maybe I’ve simply learned to say no.”
The Whole Neighborhood Heard
Then Monica lost her temper.
She began shouting.
“You think you’re better than everyone because you’re retired?”
I remained calm.
“No.”
“You think you can control everything?”
“No.”
“You’ve always been difficult!”
At that moment, one of the neighbors came outside.
Then another.
People had heard the shouting.
Within minutes, several neighbors were standing on their porches.
Nobody knew what was happening.
One neighbor asked, “What’s going on?”
Monica immediately pointed at me.
“She’s refusing to let me charge my car!”
I almost laughed.
That’s how she chose to explain it.
I calmly replied:
“She’s been charging her car from my outdoor outlet without permission. My electricity bill doubled. I asked her to stop, and she continued.”
The street became quiet.
One neighbor looked at Monica.
“Is that true?”
Monica didn’t answer.
Another neighbor said, “You were using her electricity?”
She finally muttered, “It wasn’t that much.”
I had brought out my electricity bills.
“I have the previous bills and the recent one. I also have the electrician’s report.”
I didn’t wave them around dramatically.
I simply held them.
The conversation changed immediately.
The neighbors understood.
Monica looked embarrassed.
But I wasn’t finished.
I told everyone the truth.
“I don’t want anyone punished. I don’t want a fight. I just want my property respected.”
One of the older neighbors nodded.
“That’s reasonable.”
Another said, “She should have asked.”
Monica looked around.
For once, nobody was defending her.
The Lesson
The following morning, something unexpected happened.
There was a knock on my door.
I opened it.
Monica was standing there.
She looked different.
Less confident.
Less angry.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
I didn’t respond immediately.
She continued.
“I shouldn’t have used your electricity.”
“No,” I agreed.
She looked down.
“I thought because you lived alone, it wouldn’t matter.”
“That’s exactly the problem.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Then she said something I didn’t expect.
