My mother.

Alive.

Smiling.

I picked up one photograph with trembling fingers.“When was this taken?”

“Three months after you were born.”

I stared at her.

“But why?”

“Because Frank wasn’t your stepfather.”

My stomach dropped.

“He was your biological father.”

I slowly lowered the photograph.

“No…”

Eleanor nodded.

“And I didn’t die when you were four.”

“Then what happened?”

She sat down.

“I disappeared.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the window.

“Because someone was trying to kill you.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What?”

“Your father had discovered something. Something powerful people were willing to do anything to keep hidden.”

I thought about Frank.

His warning.

His final words.

Everything you believe is false.

Eleanor continued.

“When you were four, Frank found evidence that a man named Richard Hale had been using his company to move illegal money through several charities.”

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

She opened the metal box again and pulled out a yellowed newspaper clipping.

At the bottom was a photograph of Frank.

The headline read:

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DISAPPEARS AFTER EXPOSING FINANCIAL SCANDAL

I stared at it.

“This says Frank disappeared.”

“He did.”

“But he was living with me.”

“He returned under another identity.”

My head was spinning.

“Why would he do that?”

“To protect you.”

I stood up.

“You’re telling me the man who raised me spent my entire life pretending to be someone else?”

“He wasn’t pretending to love you.”

Her voice cracked.

“That part was real.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

Eleanor looked at me for a long moment.

“Because I was told that if I ever came near you again, you would die.”

Silence filled the room.

I thought about every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every time Frank had tucked a blanket around me.

Every time he had called me his little girl.

All those memories suddenly felt different.

Then Eleanor reached beneath the table.

She pulled out another envelope.

“This is what Frank wanted you to have.”

I stared at it.

There was my name written across the front.

In Frank’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

I unfolded it.

My little girl,

If you’re reading this, I’m already gone.

I know you will feel betrayed. I know you’ll wonder why I lied.

But every lie I told was meant to keep you alive.

There is one thing I never told you.

The people who threatened your mother never stopped looking for you.

My breathing stopped.

I continued reading.

For years, I believed Eleanor was the only person who knew the truth.

I was wrong.

Someone close to you has known everything from the beginning.
