“Long day?” I asked.
She forced a smile.
“You could say that.”
“You look exhausted.”
“I’m okay.”
“You sure?”
She glanced toward the street.
“My brother’s waiting.”
“You have a brother?”
She smiled more sincerely this time.
“I’m his caregiver.”
I immediately remembered.
Her younger brother.
The one she’d told me about twenty years earlier.
Watching Her Leave
She hurried back toward an old sedan parked near the curb.
The paint had faded.
One headlight was cracked.
The engine struggled to start.
Then, before driving away, she rested her forehead against the steering wheel.
Her shoulders began shaking.
She was crying.
I stood at the window feeling helpless.
The woman who had once lifted me from the darkest period of my life was now carrying burdens of her own.
I knew I couldn’t simply watch her disappear again.
An Idea
The next morning, I placed another delivery order.
This time I added a note requesting Charlotte if possible.
I also included a message.
“You forgot something yesterday. Please come back.”
I hoped she wouldn’t misunderstand.
The Second Visit
The following evening, she knocked again.
The moment I opened the door, she looked anxious.
“I’m sorry,” she said quickly.
“Did I make a mistake?”
“No.”
“If something was missing, I’ll fix it.”
I smiled.
“Nothing was missing.”
She looked confused.
“Then… why did you ask me to come back?”
“Because there’s something I want to show you.”
Recognition
She stepped inside cautiously.
Her eyes wandered across family photos, bookshelves, and framed awards.
Then they landed on an old photograph sitting on the fireplace.
It showed two awkward teenagers dressed for prom.
One smiling confidently.
The other nervously adjusting his tie.
Charlotte gasped.
“No…”
She picked up the frame.
“It can’t be.”
I smiled.
“It’s me.”
She stared.
“Oh my goodness.”
Then tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t recognize you.”
“I know.”
She laughed through her tears.
