Choosing a sweet, ripe watermelon does not have to be a guessing game. While every melon looks different, a few simple signs can help you make a better choice at the market. Paying attention to its appearance, weight, and stem can give you useful clues.
Start by checking the field spot, the area where the watermelon rested on the ground while growing. A creamy yellow or golden-colored spot is generally a better sign than a white one. It suggests the watermelon had enough time to develop, although it does not guarantee sweetness.
Next, examine the rind. Some watermelons develop slightly webbed or rough-looking markings beneath the surface. These can be useful clues, but they should not be considered proof of ripeness. The melon should also feel firm and should not have large soft areas, deep bruises, or obvious damage.
