I Found a Tiny White Stick in My Son’s Room and Was Too Embarrassed to Ask Him… Does Anyone Know What It Is?

Parenting teenagers comes with surprises, some delightful, some confusing. One evening, while tidying my 16-year-old son’s room, I stumbled upon a small white stick. It was unlike anything I recognized, and for a moment, I froze, unsure whether to ask him about it.

At first glance, it looked like a miniature USB drive or perhaps a charger component. Its white plastic casing, small size, and elongated shape seemed innocent enough. But as I examined it more closely, I realized something was off. There was no metal plug, no buttons, no ports, no labeling—just a smooth plastic body, a capped bottom, and tiny perforated holes at the top.

I turned it over in my hand, puzzled. Could it be a school device? A tiny electronic gadget? A makeup tool? Or perhaps something else entirely that I didn’t want to know about? The more I held it, the more my imagination ran wild.

I almost asked him directly. But asking a teenager, “What is this?” can go down awkward paths I didn’t want to explore. Instead, I did what many careful parents might do—I took a photo of it and tried to identify it myself first.

Hours of research later, I finally found the answer: it was a Vicks stick, also known as a nasal inhaler or VapoInhaler. Not a USB. Not a vape. Not a gadget. Just a small, portable nasal inhaler used to relieve congestion, blocked sinuses, or irritated nasal passages.

How It Works

The design suddenly made sense. Those tiny holes at the top weren’t decorative—they allowed the menthol vapors inside to flow freely when someone inhales. Inside the stick is an absorbent wick infused with strong-smelling vapors, often menthol and camphor. When inhaled, the aroma creates a cooling, clearing sensation, helping the user breathe easier almost immediately.

Vicks sticks are commonly used during colds, allergies, or sinus irritation. Teenagers often keep them in backpacks, jackets, or bedside drawers—they’re discreet, easy to carry, and reusable.

Without the packaging, though, it can look mysterious. To an uninitiated eye, it could easily be mistaken for a modern gadget or something more dubious. But in reality, it’s a simple, safe, and familiar product.

Using a Vicks Stick

Using a Vicks nasal inhaler is simple:

  1. Remove the cap.
  2. Hold it near one nostril while closing the other.
  3. Inhale slowly, then repeat for the other nostril.

Most products are intended for individual use to avoid spreading germs, and the cap should always remain on when not in use to preserve the vapor.

Though many versions are designed for teens 12 and older, some contain medicated vapors, so it’s important to read the packaging and follow usage instructions. Misuse or prolonged inhalation can cause temporary irritation, sneezing, or a burning sensation.
