The incident came on the opening night of his joint tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, a run scheduled to hit 26 venues. Next up on the calendar was supposed to be Chicago on Friday night, followed by Columbus.

Then came the update fans had been waiting for. In a post shared by Live Nation Chicago, Richie’s team confirmed that under advisement by doctors to rest and return to full health, he had postponed his next two shows — Friday, June 26 in Chicago, and Saturday, June 27 in Columbus, OH.
He and Earth, Wind & Fire would return to the stage on Tuesday, June 30 in Pittsburgh, PA.
And then the line that caught fans’ attention: Lionel was “heartbroken” to postpone the two shows and “cannot wait to be back performing for his fans.”
That single word — heartbroken — set off a wave of reaction. For a performer known for joyful, sing-along arena nights, it landed harder than the usual boilerplate apology.
Rescheduled dates, the statement added, would be announced soon. The United Center in Chicago echoed the news with its own show update on Facebook, noting the postponement was made “Under advisement by doctors.”

Not everyone was sympathetic. “He’s Faking It,” one skeptic posted bluntly. Another claimed, “He can’t sing anymore anyway. Voice is gone. This is all a PR stunt.”
But plenty pushed back in defense of veteran artists still touring into their late 70s and 80s. As one fan put it, “they are the real ones.”
For now, Richie’s team has asked fans to hold tight. The Pittsburgh stop on June 30 is the next time the world will see whether the heartbroken icon is ready to do what he does best — perform.
