This morning, I went to the beach with my dog for a walk.

I kept my distance, torn between fear and fascination. The thing seemed to breathe with the tide, its translucent body pulsing as if alive, even though it lay motionless on the sand. Every instinct told me to leave it alone, to pull my dog away and pretend we’d never seen it. But curiosity dug in deeper than fear.
