We keep seeing these along the roads in Oregon, and we still have no idea what they are. They’re usually placed at the end of a driveway, with the lower glass section facing toward the road. They look like they’re around 15 feet tall. Every time my wife sees one, she gets frustrated trying to figure it out. At first, we wondered: Is it some kind of lookout tower? A giant birdhouse? # We Kept Seeing These Strange Towers Along Oregon Roads—The Mystery Finally Solved
If you’ve ever taken a long drive through rural Oregon, you know that the scenery can be just as interesting as the destination.
There are towering evergreens, open fields, old barns, winding country roads, weathered fences, handmade signs, historic farmhouses, and the occasional structure that makes you slow down and wonder what you’re looking at.
But during one of our drives through the Oregon countryside, we began noticing something that neither my wife nor I could explain.
At first, we thought we’d simply spotted an unusual structure belonging to one property owner.
Then we saw another.
And another.
Before long, we realized these strange towers weren’t isolated curiosities. They seemed to appear again and again along rural roads, often standing near the ends of long driveways.
They were tall, narrow, and wooden, sometimes appearing to rise roughly 15 feet above the ground. Near the lower portion was what looked like a glass-covered compartment, with the glass facing toward the road.
And inside?
Nothing obvious.
No person.
No animals.
No machinery.
No obvious equipment.
Just an empty-looking enclosure.
Naturally, my wife became determined to figure them out.
Every time we passed one, she’d point toward it and say some version of the same thing:
“What is that thing?”
And honestly, I didn’t have an answer.
So we started guessing.
At first, our guesses were completely ridiculous.
Maybe it was a miniature lookout tower.
Maybe it was an enormous birdhouse.
Could it be a wildlife feeder?
Was it an old-fashioned hunting structure?
Maybe it had something to do with farming.
