His gaze was nailed to the newborn’s face.
His hands were shaking.
The nurses had never seen him like this before.
“Doctor, are you okay?” He asked one of them.
He didn’t answer.
He only took one step closer.
Look at the baby’s tiny face.
Then the small half-moon-shaped mark behind his left ear.
The doctor left a deep sob.
“It can’t… it can’t…”
Joanna got up immediately.
“What is going on? Is my child well?”
The doctor hastily wiped his eyes.
“The baby is perfectly healthy.”
He took a pause.
“But I have to ask you a question.”
Joanna’s heart beaten hard.
“Did you know a man named Logan Wright?”
Her face was pale.
“He was… my fiancé.”
Her voice broke.
“She abandoned me when she found out I was pregnant.”
The doctor closed his eyes.
Two tears rolled down his cheeks.
“He didn’t leave because he didn’t love you or your child.”
Joanna froze.

The doctor took a deep breath.

The room was plunged into silence.
The nurses looked at each other.
Joanna felt like time stopped.
“Are you… your father?”
Robert nodded late.
“Yes.”
Joanna started shaking.
“Why did he leave me?”
The old doctor lowered his eyes.
“He didn’t want to abandon you.”
Joanna looked at him without understanding.
“Seven months ago Logan was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of cancer.”
His words fell like a thunderbolt.
“No…”
“The doctors gave him only a few months to live.”
Joanna felt her eyes filled with tears.
“He told me that if he stayed with you, he would force you to see the man you loved die.”
Robert took an old envelope out of his pocket.
“He asked me to give him to you only if the child was born.”
Joanna opened the letter with trembling hands.
